What should I do if I (or a family member) have a medical condition that may not be covered?
“My doctor says I can travel, so my insurance should cover me.”
Although it is important to get your doctor’s clearance before you travel, their opinion does not guarantee that any travel insurance will cover you.
“My doctor and I think my pre-existing condition is stable, so I should be fine.”
Only the insurance company determines if your pre-existing condition is stable and eligible for coverage.
“I'll just hop on the first flight home if I have a medical emergency.”
There are numerous scenarios in which a severe illness or injury could prevent you from flying home. Airlines will not allow persons to travel if they consider it unsafe.
Always make sure you have travel insurance coverage before you embark on your journey.
“I'll just pay out-of-pocket if I have a medical emergency.”
Medical treatment outside of Canada can cost thousands of dollars each day, particularly in the United States, the most visited country by Canadians.
“I have to call the insurance company and notify them I'll be travelling.”
You do not need to notify the insurer that you will be travelling.
But you are welcome to contact them with any questions or concerns.
“The insurance company won’t cover me for anything because I have a pre-existing condition.”
Medical expenses associated with your pre-existing condition may not be covered if the condition is not deemed "Stable."
However, other unrelated medical expenses will be considered independently.
